No? Have you thought about Instagram? Perhaps you think Instagram is just for the 18 – 29-year-olds or for posting photos of your holiday. But did you know that businesses are using this platform as a way to showcase their products and services through images, videos, and captions? Some of the big brands are using Instagram to promote their products.
Instagram is a smartphone app where you can reach your ideal customers or clients. And where do most of us spend our time? You guessed it, on our mobiles! So why not take advantage and let potential customers discover and become inspired by what you have to offer. Don’t forget Instagram isn’t just for photos, you can post short video’s from 3-60 seconds. There is a web-based application available however, you can only post comments and edit your profile, it doesn’t have the functionality for you to upload any photos or video.
Here are a few tips to help you get started with Instagram.
- Your Profile Photo
Make sure your profile photo is clear and within the recommended dimensions of 110 x 110 pixels.
- Your Bio
You have 150 words to use so make sure you use this space wisely by telling people about what you do. Also, Instagram doesn’t allow you to include a link to your website in your bio section as it is not clickable. Instead, use the designated URL area under your profile settings and insert a URL directing your followers to a specific page on your website. You can periodically change this to promote a new service or landing page.
When posting on Instagram, make sure you are consistent and post regularly. Check out the best time of day for posting.
- Write a Caption
Your caption needs to be rich in keywords related to your product or service. Make sure your keywords are popular.
Hashtags are really important and can help you reach a wider audience and increase your reach to your potential customers. Do some research and see what hashtags are trending, make sure they are specific and relevant to your brand. Tell your audience what you are working on, show them what happens behind the scenes, your latest posts, specials etc.
Unlike other social media platforms, Instagram is not as strict with the use of hashtags (up to 30 can be used) but it is recommended to use between 5-10, just remember to keep it relevant to your brand and photo/video.
- Engage With Your Followers
Respond to your followers who have liked or commented on your image and start a conversation. Make sure you include their Instagram handle (“@” followed by their username) so they will be notified.
One important thing to mention, remember when you create your account that it is not set to Private, otherwise no one will find you!
